From storm-tinged and rattlesnake-ridden deserts housing downtrodden garage mechanics to the carnival fantasies of the Jersey Shore boardwalk guarded by greasers and lusty dive bar waitresses, Bruce Springsteen’s imaginative and evocative lyrics paint an eclectic tapestry of vivid landscapes and complex characters.
My book examines the relationship between his rich music and the cinematic form. I study how Springsteen's songs and status as a cultural icon intersects and augments a film's thematic and visual language in Peter Bogdanovich's Mask, Jonathan Demme's Philadelphia, David Chase's The Sopranos, and many more.
